PART 1: Tibetan Architecture, Architectural Preservation, and Tibetan Cultural Heritage

WEDNESDAY 24 – THURSDAY 25 JULY

This part of the Session will be convened under the aegis of the Committee for the Study of Historic Tibetan Architecture (CSHTA). To learn more about the CSHTA and its development within  the IATS, click here.

The presentations will be coordinated by:

Deborah Klimburg-Salter  <klimburg-salter.kunstgeschichte@univie.ac.at>
Janet Gyatso <jgyatso@hds.harvard.edu>
Heather Stoddard      <heather.stoddard@orinst.ox.ac.uk>

The first day of the Session will be a tribute to André Alexander’s life and work and his contributions to the study of Tibetan architecture, architectural preservation, and Tibetan cultural heritage.  In André’s short life, he worked to preserve Tibetan and Himalayan architecture and art. He was a pioneer in the field of architecture conservation and mural painting conservation. André wrote books and articles, gave lectures, photographed and painted. His topics of research ranged from history, architecture, conservation, urban planning and art in Tibet and in the Himalaya.  He was a founding member of the IATS committee CSHTA (Committee for the Study of Historic Tibetan Architecture), dedicated to raising awareness about Tibetan Heritage Preservation. Toward this  end, André co-organized a CSHTA panel dedicated to new initiatives in the field at each IATS conference.  We intend to continue this tradition and to honor André’s life’s work by incorporating papers that:

  • report on new initiatives in the field of Tibetan Architectural Conservation anywhere within the Tibetan cultural zone.
  • update continuing work initiated by André or the THF Research  directly mentored by André.
  • present new research in the field of Tibetan architecture (in the Tibetan cultural zone.)
